Dr. G. Herman Porter, right, was presented with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. Pat McCrory during recent ceremonies at the N.C. Association of Community College trustees meeting in Raleigh. The Governor referred to Porter as "one of the pioneers of the community college system." Porter served in many capacities in the community college system, including being named acting president of Southeastern Community College, interim president of Isothermal Community College and soon after retiring in 1986, returned to his home county as interim president of Wayne Community College. One year later, he was named president of WCC, where he helped develop plans for a new campus and the construction of the first several buildings. He was appointed to the state Community College State Board by the legislature, serving from 1999 to 2001. In 2003, he received the I.E. Ready Award, the highest award given by the State Board of Community Colleges, and was also recognized for being one of the two longest employees in the community college system.
