Wayne County residents can join millions of youths internationally for a day of service on April 18 for the Literacy Connections of Wayne County's third annual Wayne County Literacy Fair.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Literacy Connections of Wayne County at 2001 E. Ash St. It is free and open to the public.
The Literacy Fair coincides with Global Youth Service Day. It is an effort to include young people in service.
"It's a fun day of service," said Amanda Hudson, AmeriCorps member and media liaison for Literacy Connections.
The aim of the event is to promote and to advocate for literacy in Wayne County. Four out of 10 adults in the county are reading below an eighth grade reading level.
Children will have the opportunity to write thank you cards to veterans at the fair. Local 4-H clubs will be in attendance helping out. Texas Roadhouse has donated lunch to all volunteers.
Older children will have the opportunity to read aloud to younger children at the reading station.
The Red Cross and Optimist Club of Wayne County will also have booths at the event.
Raffles will take place every 30 minutes, with gift cards as prizes. Children can also win prizes at the different games, like cornhole and Ping-Pong.
There will be a book giveaway for all ages from toddlers to adults.
More than 1,500 books will be given away at the event. Ms. Hudson says she is most excited for the giveaways. She has always been a big reader.
"The more we can give away, the better," she said. She hopes to have no books leftover after the event.
Participants get to choose their own book. The books were donated by the community and AmeriCorps.
"Everyone should have a couple books at home," she said.
