As of 8 a.m. Thursday, Wayne Memorial Hospital officials lifted visitation restrictions that had been put into place in late December because of concerns about the flu.

The restrictions were lifted because of a "steep decline" in positive influenza tests across North Carolina over the past week, including at Wayne Memorial Hospital, said Georgia M. Dees, the hospital's director of public relations.

The restrictions were put into place because of a high volume of flu in the community, and in order to protect patients and employees at the hospital, she said.

Under the restrictions, no visitors under the age of 12 were allowed and patients could only have two visitors at a time.

Also, anyone who had experienced or were experiencing fever, headache or cough over the previous 24 hours were asked not to visit anyone at the hospital.

"We continue to have some influenza cases in our community, and infection control encourages everyone to continue meticulous hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette in our facility and in the community," Ms. Dees said. "At Wayne Memorial Hospital, we remain committed in our efforts to protect our patients, staff and the community against the transmission of germs and infectious illnesses.

"Thank you for your compliance and patience during our flu season this year."
