Another eatery coming

Construction began recently on the remodeling of the building that once housed Schlotzsky's on Berkeley Boulevard. The building is set to become a McAlister's Deli with a target opening date in April.
Goldsboro residents will soon have another deli to choose from for lunch or dinner.
McAlister's Deli, owned by Southern Deli holdings out of Matthews, will take over the old Schlotzsky's Deli location at 431 N. Berkeley Blvd. It is set to be open sometime in April, but no specific date in April has been set for the grand opening.
"McAlister's Deli is pleased to become a part of the Goldsboro community," Southern Deli Holdings Chief Executive Office Yaron Goldman said. "We look forward to bringing McAlister's friendly atmosphere, unique menu and genuine hospitality to the local residents of Goldsboro."
McAlister's will be the third restaurant to open in Goldsboro since January 2014, following behind Texas Roadhouse, which opened in June 2014, and Ed's Southern Food and Spirits, which opened in October 2014.
Two other restaurants -- Dunkin' Donuts and Panera Bread -- are also expected to open on Berkeley Boulevard in 2015.
Mitchell Whitley, with AMS Contractors, is working to help rebuild the inside of the old Schlotzsky's and said the Goldsboro building is part of McAlister's expansion from its home base in Charlotte into other cities throughout North Carolina and South Carolina.
The building will not be torn down, and the inside has been gutted and will be redecorated for the new deli.
"It's hard to describe what it's going to look like until its finished," Whitley said. "I know they like to put knickknacks and things like that on the walls."
McAlister's opened its first store in Oxford, Miss., in 1989 in a converted gas station.
The Goldsboro location will offer McAlister's standard fare of sandwiches, soups, salads and desserts, and will offer takeout and outdoor dining options.
There are currently more than 320 McAlister's restaurants nationwide.
