University of Mount Olive will host Hammered Dulcimer Music Event

MOUNT OLIVE -- The University of Mount Olive will host the Hammered Dulcimer Music Event on Sunday, Feb. 8. at 6 p.m. in the Historic Assembly Hall, 207 Wooten St.

The event will consist of a community worship service, lunch, and a concert planned by Snow Hill Original Free Will Baptist Church, May's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, and the university.

Assistant professor of music Dr. William Gross will be the featured pianist.

The event will kick off on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. in Raper Hall for a time of fellowship, which will be followed by a worship service in Rodgers Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Afterward, the community is invited to stay and have lunch at the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center for $7.50. The concert will feature the musical talent of Joshua Messick.

Messick is an award-winning Hammered Dulcimer musician. His music draws from a blend of genres such as Celtic, Indian, Japanese, and New Age styles in addition to Appalachian Folk, Hymns, Classical, and Traditional Favorites.

The concert will also feature Dr. John Blackwell, university dean of the chapel, as the event speaker. The service and concert are sponsored by the L. Marvin and Berta L. Edwards Family Endowment Fund.
