Crash investigators with the Goldsboro Police Department believe a medical condition caused a man to lose control of his vehicle on U.S. 70 Bypass West on Sunday, sending him over a bridge and onto the street below.
Joe Nathan Broadhead, 81, of Goldsboro, died of his injuries after he was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The accident happened at 9:49 a.m. as he crossed over Berkeley Boulevard.
According to the wreck report, Broadhead, who was traveling west on U.S. 70, ran off the road to the left and into the protected median and struck a sign. He then continued another 1,163 feet before hitting a guard rail, becoming airborne.
His vehicle went over the bridge embankment, traveled 74 feet and crashed onto North Berkeley Boulevard, hitting the northbound lane first then coming to rest in the southbound lane.
No other vehicles were involved in the wreck, and no one else was injured.
