The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating the death of a man found shot inside his home late Tuesday night.

William Andrew Alston, 65, died following an apparent robbery at his home at 102 E. Elm St. around 11:30 p.m., according to a police report.

Officers responded to a shots fired call and found Alston on the floor of his home with an undetermined number of bullet wounds.

Wayne County Emergency Medical Services took Alston to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he died overnight.

Police currently have no suspects. Alston's relationship to the shooter remains unknown, investigators said.

Sgt. Jeremy Sutton said no details about what was taken during the robbery would be released, but that Goldsboro residents should not be overly concerned.

"It's an isolated incident. It's not gang related," Sutton said.

A car pulled onto the scene as the ambulance took Alston away from the residence, and the driver, overcome by grief, got out of the car and lay on the ground in front of the residence.

The driver, whose identity was not released by police, was then helped by the officers and firefighters working the scene. An ambulance was called to the scene, but was subsequently dismissed as the driver was able to leave the scene in his own vehicle.

Sutton said no details about the second car on the scene were available for release.
