Two Goldsboro women were killed Sunday morning in a single-car crash on Interstate 795 in southern Wilson County, according to investigators with the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Sylvia Holmes was driving a 1999 Suzuki when the rear passenger-side tire and spindle came off of the car, officers said, causing Ms. Holmes to lose control of the vehicle.
The car, traveling northbound on the four-lane highway, then careened off the roadway before coming to rest on an embankment along the tree line at the highway's edge.
Ms. Holmes and her passenger, Virginia Lee McNair, both died as a result of the wreck that happened about a mile north of the Black Creek exit.
The accident occurred just after 10:30 a.m. and is believed to be the result of the equipment failure, according to the report filed by the state Highway Patrol.
Sgt. R.E. Westbrook with the Highway Patrol in Wilson County confirmed the identities of the victims today. No further details were available as of press time.
The identities of the two women were withheld Sunday to give authorities time to notify the families involved, Westbrook said.
The weekend crash was the second fatal wreck involving Wayne residents to unfold recently.
Two men were killed Wednesday evening in a head-on collision on Outlaw's Bridge Road between Mount Olive and Albertson.
Highway Patrol Sgt. Will Thurston said Ovidio Mendez and Feliciano Velazquez were driving in opposite directions when Velazquez's Buick passenger car crossed left of center and struck Mendez's Toyota Highlander head-on.
Thurston said Velazquez was killed on impact, and Mendez died on the way to the hospital.
Mendez and Velazquez were the only occupants in their respective vehicles. Neither of them had driver's licenses.
Speed was a factor in the crash, Thurston said.
