MOUNT OLIVE -- Two men were killed Wednesday evening in a head-on collision on Outlaw's Bridge Road between Mount Olive and Albertson.

Highway Patrol officials said they received the call about the crash at 5:44 p.m.

Sgt. Will Thurston said Ovidio Mendez and Feliciano Velazquez were driving in opposite directions when Velazquez's Buick passenger car crossed left of center and struck Mendez's Toyota Highlander head-on.

Thurston said Velazquez was killed on impact, and Mendez died on the way to the hospital.

Mendez and Velazquez were the only occupants in their respective vehicles. Neither of them had driver's licenses.

Speed was a factor in the crash, Thurston said.

Both men were 24 years old and both were from Mount Olive. The crash is still under investigation.

Meanwhile, two people were killed in a Durham accident over the holiday.

Durham police say the driver and a passenger of a car that wrecked on a Durham freeway ran from the crash, leaving behind one of their passengers who would later die.

Investigators said in a news release that a Honda Civic registered in South Carolina lost control while speeding on N.C. 147 around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday and crashed into a guardrail.

Police say the driver and front seat passenger ran from the crash and haven't been found.

Authorities say two people in the back seat were ejected. One of them died at the hospital and the other is in critical condition. Their names have not been released.

Police say their investigation continues and no arrests have been made.
