MOUNT OLIVE -- George Robert "Bobby" Denning has been named to the University of Mount Olive Foundation Board.

The foundation, which was formed in early 2004, has been active in its efforts to raise funds for the university.

Denning is a lifelong resident of Wayne County and has been in business in Mount Olive for more than 44 years. While Denning is largely self-taught, his business sense and innovative ideas have allowed him to create and to manage the daily operations of three corporations.

Over the years, Denning has been the recipient of several business awards including the 1982 State Small Businessman of North Carolina award presented by then Gov. James B. Hunt.

The board currently has 24 members, including business leaders Robert L. Greczyn, retired chief executive officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina; Bill Bryan, president of Mt. Olive Pickle Co.; and Darrell Horne, chief executive officer of Horne Moving Systems Inc. and chairman of the UMO Board of Trustees.

The purpose of the board is to find alternate sources of funding and equipment for a variety of programs and projects addressing the needs of a growing University of Mount Olive.

The board is expected to play a critical role in providing the University of Mount Olive access to key philanthropic, corporate, civic and governmental decision-makers, while serving as ambassadors to further the mission of the University.
