Police look for suspect in shooting

A Kinston man Friday afternoon was pistol-whipped and then shot in the leg at the 1800 building at Day Circle.
Daniel Lee West, 20, of 712 West Road, Kinston, told police he was standing on the top steps at the building at about 3:20 p.m. and talking to an unidentified man when he was struck several times in the head with a handgun.
The report did not indicate if the assailant was the man West was talking to or someone else.
West said he fell to the ground after being struck.
When he tried to get up and rush the suspect, the man shot him in the leg and then fled on foot, he told police.
Wayne County EMS transported West to Wayne Memorial Hospital.
No additional information was available prior to press time Saturday night, although police said they were looking for a known suspect.
