Wayne County commissioners Tuesday will consider enacting an ordinance regulating parking in and around the county courthouse.
The ordinance would apply to county-owned parking spaces on the Courthouse Square, the parking lot on the east side of William Street across from the courthouse and jail and the parking lot on the south side of Chestnut Street across from the jail.
It would limit parking to the marked parking spaces only. It also would regulate parking in handicapped and reserved spaces.
If approved, vehicles not parked in a marked space or that are invalidly parked in reserved or handicapped space may be towed.
The owner or operator of a towed vehicle would have to pay any towing or storage costs.
Tuesday's meeting will start with an agenda briefing at 8 a.m. followed by the formal session at 9 a.m. in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the county courthouse annex.
A public hearing will be held at 9:15 a.m. on a request for a front yard setback variance at 1470 Gurley Dairy Road, Pikeville.
Also on the agenda, commissioners will consider motions to approve the extension of the 2013-14 Wayne County fire department contracts and a request to name the bridge over Beaverdam Creek on Oakland Church Road as the Grace B. Gurley Memorial Bridge
During special recognition Jeremy Hill will be introduced as the new emergency medical services manager and Jerilyn Lee as interim human resources director.
The only item under the consent agenda is a petition to add Waverly Drive Extension in the Meares Bluff Plantation to the state highway maintenance system.
The public comments portion of the meeting will start at 10 a.m. People will have four minutes to speak on their topic of choice.
