MOUNT OLIVE -- The Mount Olive Area Heart Walk gets under way Saturday morning at the Mt. Olive Pickle Co. headquarters.
The morning begins with registration at 8 a.m. and a brief program, with the walk itself starting around 9 a.m. In all, 22 teams will make the 3-mile walk through downtown Mount Olive and back.
During the morning, several people will talk about the impact of heart disease on their lives, and heart disease survivors will be recognized.
"We have been looking forward to this day," said Rhonda Myers, who co-chairs the event this year with Stan Ricker and Peggy Hester. "It culminates the hard work of a lot of people in our community who are committed to making a difference for people with heart disease."
Individual teams have been fundraising for some time, and last month they all came together for Open House for Heart, which generated about $2,000 in proceeds. The historic Flowers-Wooten-Holmes House in downtown Mount Olive was open for public tours, with refreshments for sale and a silent auction generating funds for the American Heart Association.
The Mount Olive Area Heart Walk has been held in Mount Olive since the 1970s, when Mrs. Hester and her late mother, Polly Waters, started it. It has generated several hundred thousand dollars over the years.
