A traffic accident at North Drive Elementary School ended with a man being arrested for possession of a firearm and drugs on school property Friday morning.

Michael Henry Herron, 33, of 902 S. Andrews Ave., was involved in a crash on campus and police were called to the scene. An officer walking past Herron's car smelled marijuana.

Maj. Mike West said the officer told Herron he smelled marijuana and was going to search his car. The officer asked Herron to tell him if he had marijuana in the car, and Herron pulled out a bag containing more than 50 grams of marijuana.

The officer also found a loaded firearm in the console where the marijuana was stored, West said.

Herron is currently being held in the Wayne County Jail under a $30,000 secured bond. He is facing three felony charges and two misdemeanor charges.

The felonies are possession with intent to sell and distribute marijuana, possession of a controlled substance on school property and possession of a gun on school property. The two misdemeanors are carrying a concealed gun on school property and failure to reduce speed, which officers said led to the accident.

Herron is to appear in court on Monday.
