Man, 20, shot, killed in city

A team of investigators is working to solve the murder of a Goldsboro man who was shot to death in the 600 block of Devereaux Street at 10:55 p.m. Monday.
Goldsboro police were a block away when the shooting took place.
Jayquan Devon Crawford, 20, of Franklin Street, died en route to Wayne Memorial Hospital, Goldsboro police Maj. Al King said.
"Officers were actually out on the south side when they heard gunshots. They called them in and then got out on foot," King said.
He said the officers walked one block over from the intersection of South Slocumb and Elm streets to Devereaux Street.
According to the police report, a black female then approached one of the officers and told him there was a person lying in front of the residence at 616 Devereaux St.
It was there that officers found Crawford suffering from what police are calling an "apparent gunshot wound."
Bullets also struck the residence, but no one inside was injured.
Wayne County EMS responded and were able to load the victim into the ambulance, but he succumbed to his wounds, King said.
Crime scene technicians worked through the night and did not release the scene until 7:30 this morning.
"There is still a lot of work ahead of us," King said.
The victim's mother reported to police headquarters this morning to meet with investigators.
King said no lead detective has been assigned to the case. He and Sgt. Jeremy Sutton, the sergeant in charge of investigations, as well as the on-call investigator each responded to the scene, and so the three will work the investigation together, he said.
King said there was not much of a crowd around the murder scene throughout the night. Additional investigators will be out today canvassing the neighborhood and conducting interviews with potential witnesses, he said.
"It is still very early -- very early -- in the investigation," King said.
