A Mount Olive man turned himself in to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office on charges of armed robbery Sunday, according to a press release.

Sheriff Larry Pierce said the suspect was identified through tips from the community.

"We really encourage any citizen cooperation we can get -- any information at all," Pierce said. "And sometimes it (doesn't) pan out, but other times it will."

Ricky Donald Oddon, 24, 1764 Dobbersville Road, is charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and has been placed in the Wayne County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond.

According to the press release, Oddon allegedly entered the Friendly Mart at 4664 U.S. Highway 13 S., Thursday armed with a handgun and demanded money.

The clerk managed to escape when Oddon went behind the counter and tried to force open the register. The register failed to open, and Oddon fled.

Deputies responded and processed the crime scene, but it was not until Friday morning that the investigation gained traction.

Pierce said he received a series of phone calls from citizens that led investigators to identify Oddon as the suspect.

He said the calls were not anonymous.

"I went with Capt. Richard Lewis to conduct the initial interview," Pierce said.

And it was a direct result of this interview that prompted Oddon to turn himself in to Sheriff Pierce Sunday, he said.

According to the press release, Pierce and several of his investigators met at the Wayne County Sheriff's Annex at 7 p.m. Sunday to relieve Oddon into custody.

Oddon is next due in Wayne County District Court Sept. 16.
