Suspect tries to become victim

A man flagged down a Goldsboro police officer near the scene of a reported breaking and entering in progress Saturday and claimed to be the victim, but was later identified by a witness as the suspect, according to police.
Fred Lee Davis Jr., 52, of Goldsboro, is charged with second-degree burglary. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail under a $9,500 secured bond.
According to the report, a neighbor called 911 to report a break-in in progress at 1012 Slaughter St. at 12:35 a.m. Saturday.
As the officer arrived in the area, Davis allegedly flagged him down and said he was the victim of an attempted robbery.
The officer placed Davis in the back of his patrol car and continued on to the scene.
Once on the scene, the neighbor reported that Davis had calmly approached the residence across the street from his and began banging on the door and then kicked the door in. The neighbor said he heard breaking glass and decided to call police.
According to the report, the neighbor watched Davis as he walked through the house and out the front door.
When he realized he was being watched, Davis allegedly told the neighbor to call the police.
The neighbor identified Davis as the suspect and he was taken into custody. Davis was treated at the scene and then transported by Wayne County EMS to Wayne Memorial Hospital for further treatment to a laceration to his hand.
