Dunham's Sports opens its doors

Nearly 100 people were waiting in line Friday for the 9 a.m. grand opening of the new Dunham's Sports at the Goldsboro Promenade, 301 N. Berkeley Blvd.
The opening marked a weekend of sales and promotions. The first 100 in line Friday received a free Dunham's' T-shirt and people making purchases of $10 or more received a six-pack of Coke or Diet Coke while supplies lasted.
The first 100 customers on Saturday received a Dunham's Sports baseball cap and on Sunday the first 50 people/families were to receive a $10 Dunham's Sports gift card.
Store hours will be 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The Goldsboro store is the ninth Dunham's to open in North Carolina.
It will offer a full line of traditional sporting goods and athletic equipment as well as a wide variety of active and casual sports apparel and footwear including Under Armour, Nike, Adidas, Puma and more.
An expanded hunting department will offer name brands like Remington, Rocky, Bushnell and Barnett.
It also will have a Fairway Center golf shop featuring top name brands like Taylormade, Nike, Callaway and others.
"We just came to North Carolina about a year and a half ago. We started in Burlington," said Adam Rice, manager of the Burlington store. "Where we usually go to, we don't go to the big, big cities. As a sporting goods store, as a hunting-type store we love the country I guess you could say. Our business model is about the big names that we have like the Under Armour, Remington, Nike. If you can think of a sport, we probably have something for it.
"But the prices are lower than what you are going to see just about everywhere else. We do everything we can to keep that cost as low as possible so we can deliver that to our customers. That is one of the reason while coming to a town like Goldsboro with the military right here is a great location for us to be in."
Further expansion is planned in the state over the next two years, he said.
Dunham's, one of the nation's largest retail sporting goods chains, was founded in 1937 in Detroit as Dunham's Bait and Tackle. It has grown to more than 200 stores in 18 Midwestern and Southern states.
