Optimist Club of Goldsboro will host an open house Saturday, Aug. 2, from noon to 4 p.m. at the club's headquarters, 205 E. Walnut St.

During the open house, club members will provide information about the club's Computers4Kids program and give tours of the club's operations.

Popcorn and refreshments will be served.

Also during the open house, computers can be donated to support the Computers4Kids program.

Low-income families who have children attending Wayne County Public Schools for the 2014-15 school year, and currently do not have a home computer, are encouraged to attend and to obtain an application for a refurbished computer.

There is a limit of one refurbished computer per qualified family.

Since the Computers4Kids program started in 2012, 87 families with 187 children attending Wayne County Public Schools have benefited.

Families who have children in kindergarten through third grades and who qualify might be able to purchase a refurbished computer that has been preinstalled with the Edubuntu operating system for $30. Families who have children in grades 4 through 12, and who qualify might be able to purchase a refurbished computer that has been preinstalled with the Windows 7 operating system for $40 or $50, depending on the features included with the computer. All refurbished computers include an LCD monitor, keyboard, mouse, mouse pad, and speakers. The Windows 7 computers include Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 and a USB flash drive.

For prequalified families, the Optimist Club of Goldsboro will have a distribution and training day for the Optimist Computers4Kids program on the first Saturday of each month during the 2014-15 school year, starting on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Prequalified families will receive a letter informing them when they have been scheduled to receive a refurbished computer.
