Two contestants place in pageant preliminaries

Two Miss North Carolina contestants from Goldsboro captured early wins in the preliminary events Tuesday night.
Miss Goldsboro 2014, Emily Tucker, won the talent portion for her group of competitors and also was chosen as one of the Top 5 for the Quality of Life Community Service Award. Her platform is Operation: Outreach, designed to enrich the relationship between the military and its surrounding community.
Beth Stovall, currently serving as Miss Greater Sampson County, won the lifestyle and fitness award, or the swimsuit award.
The lead-in events to the state crown, which will be televised Saturday evening, has the 34 contestants divided into groups each of the three evenings.
Preliminaries continue tonight and Thursday night.
Miss Tucker is scheduled to be judged tonight in the area of evening gown and on-stage question and on Thursday in the swimsuit category.
Miss Stovall will perform her talent tonight, and on Thursday she will be judged on evening gown and on-stage question.
The two local young women now vying for the same honor formerly held the same title.
Miss Stovall, 20, a 2011 graduate of Rosewood High School, was Miss Goldsboro 2013. In last year's Miss North Carolina contest, she received a talent preliminary award and finished in the Top 10.
Miss Tucker, 23, a 2009 graduate of Eastern Wayne High School, received her degree in vocal performance from East Carolina University in 2013.
Another area they have in common is their talent -- both sing opera.
The pageant will be broadcast Saturday night at 8 p.m. on Time Warner Cable, Channel 323, as well as online at www.timewarnercable.com.
Interviews of the preliminary winners will also be shown the day after each event at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Facebook at TWC Sports Channel NCSC.
