Nineteen students from Wayne Community College were selected to receive spring semester scholarships through the Golden LEAF Scholarship program for the North Carolina Community College System.

Curriculum (college credit) recipients and their programs of study were Elizabeth Audela, criminal justice; Devin Best, automotive systems; Bobby Carter, air conditioning, heating and refrigeration; Yesenia Garnica, dental assisting; Esther House, early childhood education; Ru Xin Huange, associate in arts; April Izcoa, associate in science; Paige Morning, associate in general education; Jason O'Neal, associate in arts; and Pamela White, medical laboratory technology.

Recipients enrolled in Continuing Education occupational programs were Lottie Darden, Lauren Davis, Kelsey Daw, Margaret Dube, Hannah Ellis, Susan Lynch, Kelly McLamb, Jessica Outlaw and Chelsea Wong. All are studying in the Nurse Aid I program.

The scholarships can be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, transportation and childcare expenses related to attending classes, and industry-recognized credential testing expenses that address skill gaps upon course completion. Recipients demonstrated financial need and resided in rural counties that are tobacco-dependent and/or economically distressed.

The Golden LEAF Scholarship program, which is designed to help North Carolinians attend the state's community colleges, is funded through a $750,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. The scholarship program is administered by the N.C. Community College System.
