Col. Jeannie Leavitt is no stranger to high-profile roles and soon, the Air Force's first female fighter pilot will become the principal military assistant to the secretary of defense.
Two weeks after the Air Force named the next 4th Fighter Wing commander, the woman currently charged with leading Seymour Johnson Air Force Base was notified about her next assignment.
Col. Jeannie Leavitt will, after a June change of command ceremony, become the principal military assistant to the secretary of defense.
An exact date for her departure has not yet been determined, but when she passes the 4th guidon, the man on the receiving end, Col. Mark Slocum, should not need much time to familiarize himself with the wing's mission.
He did, after all, train on the F-15E at the Goldsboro installation and last served on Seymour Johnson from February 2003 to May 2005, where his duties included directing the Wings Over Wayne Air Show as the assistant director of operations for the 334th Fighter Squadron.
