Saturday's opening day for the Goldsboro Kiwanis Club's miniature train will be held in conjunction with the international Kiwanis One Day project promoting a day of community service.

"All Aboard: Connecting Kids and Community" will be held Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Herman Park.

The club will give one free train ride for each new item donated to benefit the Goldsboro YMCA child care programs. Items being sought include books, marker sets, Play-Doh and toys.

Also, all proceeds from train tickets sold during the day will be donated to Communities in Schools, club member Jerry Bankhead said.

The Wayne Early Middle College High School Key Club will sponsor a Majesty Rose Fan Mail Station. It will include a banner that people can sign showing their support of the former "American Idol" contestant from Goldsboro.

She was a Key Club member at Wayne Community College.

The club also sent out 10 free train ride tickets to every first through fourth grade teacher in the county. The tickets will be given to students who have shown "extraordinary effort," Bankhead said.

Planning for the event began about three months ago as club members began to look at opening the train, getting it inspected and getting the schedule set up, he said.
