For some good food, and to help needy people in this community at the same time, stop by for a barbecue dinner at the Salvation Army March 27.

The organization's annual barbecue fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 610 N. William St., sponsored by the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary.

Wilbur's Barbecue will supply barbecue, coleslaw, potato salad, hush puppies, dessert and a drink -- all for $8.

"Eight dollars may seem like a lot for a plate of barbecue, but you get very large portions," said the Salvation Army's Lt. Julie Igleheart.

You can dine in, going into the building through the back door, and enjoy your choice of drinks -- tea, Coke products or water.

Or you can use the drive through, entering off William Street and exiting by way of Holly Street. At the drive through, you have your choice of Coke products or water.

Delivery service is also available for orders of 10 or more.

"And companies can treat their employees to a barbecue meal," Mrs. Igleheart said. "If you have 10 or more, we will deliver them and your employees don't have to go out. And it's a very good meal.

"If you have less than 10 employees, but don't have time to sit in a drive through, you can call ahead and when you get to the drive through, we can hand the meals straight out to you. And the food will be hot."

Tickets are available at the Salvation Army up until the day before the event, but if you don't have a ticket the day of the event, don't worry. You can go through the drive through anyway and just pay your $8 then.

The Salvation Army's barbecue fundraiser has been going on for quite a few years, said Mrs. Igleheart.

"It has turned out to be a good fundraiser," she said. "But I believe we can raise even more money for the Salvation Army through it."

Last year, the Salvation Army served more than 1,300 plates, raising more than $8,000 to help the organization with an array of things like sending children to camp and assistance with electric bills, rent and medications. All proceeds stay in Wayne and Sampson counties.

"These are thing we do here at the Salvation Army every day," Mrs. Igleheart said. "We have people knocking on our door every day for assistance."

In addition to the women's auxiliary helping with the barbecue, the Salvation Army's advisory board gets involved, helping deliver meals.

"It's a busy day, but a fun one for us," Mrs. Igleheart said.
