Special Olympians earn state basketball medals

Special Olympic Wayne County athletes recently earned 12 gold, 12 silver and four bronze medals during the 2014 State Basketball Competition, held in Smithfield. They participated in 5-on-5, 3-on-3 and individual skills competitions.
The 3-on-3 Wayne Flyers, coached by Debi Walderman, won gold medals. Team members were Erica Walderman, Melissa Stanford, Jacob Huffman, Shannon Moore, Robert Benson and Scott Britt.
The 3-on-3 Wayne Eagles, coached by Paulette Williams, won gold medals. Team members were Joseph Whitley, Michael Solomon, Donnell Knight, Brandon Owens and LaTasha Best.
The 3-on-3 Wayne Falcons, coached by Heather Monroe, won bronze medals. That team consisted of John Ragan, Jonathan Prather, Darnell Gibbs and Veronica Cutler.
Sean Bingham coached the 5-on-5 Wayne Warriors, which won silver medals. Team members included Jay Zambelli, Paul Edwards, Miguel Sheffield, Emanuel George, Mark Strickland, Reggie Myers, Moses Bland, Marcus Cox, Keith Barnes, Jessie McCracken and Brian Hammonds.
The individual skills athletes were coached by Linda Jordan. Pete Lewis won gold and Jonathan Delano won silver medals.
