Art show opens Saturday at UMO

MOUNT OLIVE -- The opening reception for the Cheryl Hinton Hooks Art Exhibition will be held Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Teresa Pelt Grubbs Fine Arts Gallery, in Laughinghouse Hall, 500 Herring Drive.
The exhibition grew out of a sabbatical awarded by the University of Mount Olive and will display works in response to Mrs. Hooks' investigation in four areas: social advocacy, creativity, spirituality and family.
Mrs. Hooks gives voice to these ideas through painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and writing.
Her most recent works include images of several interrelated themes.
"The Wounded of the World" includes images and writings in response to human trafficking and domestic abuse -- issues closer to home than many realize, Mrs. Hooks said.
"(Those issues) just wouldn't leave me. I just wanted to bring that awareness to people around me," she said.
"Remember Who You Are" deals with her family stories and what she feels are pressing issues for women today. "Seeking the Sacred Earth" offers landscapes, photographs, and sculptures, which relate to spiritual practices and everyday awareness of the sacredness all around us.
"Overall, just as human beings, if you believe that there is a God or a spiritual being, we are responsible for each other," Mrs. Hooks said.
The Collaborative Project of paintings by Mrs. Hooks and poems by Lenard Moore, also of the University of Mount Olive, is the outcome of an intimate look at the landscapes of our state.
Mrs. Hooks, professor of fine arts at UMO, received her bachelor of arts in commercial design from Atlantic Christian College in 1982 and her master of fine arts in painting and drawing from East Carolina University in 1995. She began her teaching career at UMO in the fall of 1995.
In 2003 she received the distinguished Dr. Thomas R. Morris Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University.
The show will be open from March 15 until April 4.
