But that slim margin helped Goldsboro's Majesty Rose secure the final spot in the "American Idol" Top 10 Thursday evening and a place on show's summer tour.
For the first time this season, Majesty landed in the bottom three and narrowly escaped having to sing for the judges' lone save.
And host Ryan Seacrest hinted early on that the results from some 72 million votes for the 11 remaining contestants might leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
"Tonight's outcome may surprise a few people," he said at the start of the show. "The Top 10 summer tour is at stake."
The first group of contestants called up -- Caleb Johnson, also from North Carolina, C.J. Harris and Dexter Roberts -- were declared safe.
And at the show's midway point, Majesty Rose, along with Ben Briley, M.K. Nobilette and Malaya Watson faced their fate.
Seacrest gave M.K. and Malaya the news first, allowing them to join the others remaining on the show.
Majesty and Ben, who had been one of the judges' wild cards to make the Top 13, were both in the bottom three.
Sam Woolf rounded out the bottom three, with Jessica Meuse, Jena Irene and Alex Preston declared safe for another week.
As the show wrapped up, Sam was let off the hook and it all came down to Majesty and Ben to see who would have to sing for survival.
Seacrest then revealed that a margin of only 0.07 percent of the votes separated the two singers.
"The person going home unless the judges use the save is Ben Briley," he said, with just five minutes remaining of the broadcast.
And then, he uttered four words that evoked a collective sigh of relief from those attending viewing parties across Wayne County.
"Majesty, you are safe," Seacrest said.
Briley performed Grace Potter's "Stars," but the judges opted not to use their one save, marking his departure from the show.
That means Majesty is officially going on this summer's "American Idol" tour along with the others who made it into season 13's Top 10.
The contestants sing again on Wednesday night. The show airs on Fox TV from 8 to 10 p.m., with the results revealed the following night.
