The Wayne County Relay for Life will hold its annual kickoff banquet Thursday at 7 p.m. at First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Volunteers and participants in this year's Relay will use the occasion to both launch the fundraising campaign and to celebrate cancer survivors.
The American Cancer Society event will feature speakers from the community who have benefited from the money raised during the Relay for Life. Cancer survivors and caregivers also will be recognized.
The kickoff also will enable groups to register teams for the Relay, which will be held May 16-17 at the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fairgrounds.
The Relay will begin that Friday at 6 p.m.
Last year, 90 teams took part in the Relay, raising well over $400,000 for the fight against cancer.
This year, teams have already begun raising money for the event through various means: yard sales, bake sales, contests, dinners, drawings and other activities.
According to the Relay website, 52 teams have already raised more than $25,000.
