Officer talks down suspect in rape

A detective with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office talked a rape suspect holding a knife to his own throat out of a pond in the North End section of the county Sunday.
David Jacob Lambert, 28, 162 Beston Drive, is charged with first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping and first-degree sexual offense. He is being held in the Wayne County Jail under a $1 million secured bond, according to a press release issued by the Sheriff's Office Monday.
Deputies were called out after 3 p.m. Sunday to an address in the area regarding a rape that had allegedly already taken place.
Lambert's name and vehicle description were passed along to all Wayne County law enforcement agencies.
He was located a short time later and chased on foot, according to the report.
Lambert jumped into a pond and held a knife to his throat, officials said. He threatened suicide and refused to come out.
Capt. Richard Lewis, head of detectives, declined to comment on whether or not Lambert truly intended to hurt himself.
"I can't say one way or another if he would have really done it or not," he said.
Members of the Sheriff's Office patrol division, A-shift, responded, along with deputies from the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement (ACE) Team.
A standoff ensued between Lambert and the lawmen.
Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour, called to the scene specifically to talk to Lambert, was able to coax him out of the water.
"It was determined that Farfour had prior dealings with Lambert, and he was called in to convince him to come out," Lewis said.
Lewis said Lambert came out of the water but still would not surrender.
Another deputy positioned himself between Lambert and the water so the suspect could not retreat.
Deputies took Lambert down by force.
"He was subdued," Lewis said.
He was then transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital and treated for a minor laceration before being taken to jail, according to the press release.
Lambert made a first appearance in Wayne County District Court Monday, where defense attorney Carroll Turner was appointed counsel.
He is due to appear again in court Feb. 24.
