Wayne County has a new monthly jazz event. The first Wayne County Jazz Showcase will be held Feb. 21 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Arts Council of Wayne County.
It will feature one of the event organizers jazz musician Eric Dawson, who is featured in the African American Music Heritage Trails. One of the highlights of the showcase will be international recording artist Abebi Stafford, who has headlined at the Atlanta and Minneapolis jazz festivals, as well as performing throughout Europe.
"This is something new that's going to be really cool," said Arts Council director Sarah Merritt. "It came about when a group of musicians came to a lot of our Jazz on George stuff. Eric and his friends are phenomenally talented musicians. They are from Wayne County, but live in Greenville, Kinston and surrounding areas. They really wanted to start doing more with jazz in Wayne County.
The event will also be an opportunity for other jazz musicians to sit in on the concert. Those wanting to participate should go to the Arts Council's website for more information.
"It will be an evening of music," Mrs. Merritt said. "And the musicians will video document each event.
The Wayne County Jazz Showcase will be held the third Friday of every month. Tickets are $10 per person.
