WCC students to make up classes on Saturdays

Wayne Community College students who missed classes earlier this month due to the 3 inches of snow that fell across the county will be making up two of those days on Saturdays.

Community college officials announced last week that classes will be made up on Saturday, Feb. 22, and Saturday, March 1. Feb. 22 will mimic the Wednesday schedule for curriculum education students, while March 1 will mimic the Thursday schedule. Some continuing education classes also will be held those days.

The Tuesday and Friday class sessions that were missed are being made up online.

WCC President Dr. Kay Albertson said at the board of trustees meeting Friday that they could have made up all of the time using their online platforms, but that the college's leadership felt it was necessary to have that in-class time.

"More and more of our students are telling they appreciate and like more the seated class time," Dr. Albertson said.

And while some of the courses may have been well suited to being made up all online, a number also are not.

"We do a lot of our labs and hands-on classes on Wednesday and Thursdays," she said. "You need to be here to touch it."

But, she acknowledged that for some, Saturday classes may pose a hardship. For those, she noted that WCC does have a somewhat liberal attendance policy and that those issues could be worked out with individual instructors.

The bottom line, though, she said, is that the college takes its responsibility to teach its students seriously.

"Our students pay for these classes and they deserve our attention and time," she said.
