Local veterans can get an opportunity to express their feelings about their experiences in combat during a writing workshop Wednesday at Wayne Community College.

North Carolina poet laureate Joseph Bathanti will speak Tuesday night about this year's selection for the annual Wayne County Reads campaign, "The Things They Carried."

The book explores the Vietnam War from a veteran's perspective.

Bathanti will lead a writing workshop at the college the next day, from 10 a.m. until noon in room 161 of the Wayne Learning Center.

As poet laureate, Bathanti has championed the therapeutic value to veterans of having them put their experiences down on paper.

He will lead the Wednesday workshop, which is open to veterans of all ages and backgrounds.

Veterans and their families are invited to participate in the writing workshop, which is designed to help them express their military experiences through the written word. Participants do not need to have any writing experience; they just need to bring paper and a pen.

Also, the Veteran's Administration Mobile Vet Center will be at the college, parked in its front lot from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The vehicle provides opportunities for veterans to learn about benefits for which they may be eligible.

Tuesday's lecture is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Moffatt Auditorium.
