Wayne County residents awoke to a snow-covered landscape this morning as a winter storm swept over North Carolina early today, leaving behind about an inch of the white stuff over most of the county.
The snow delayed the opening of the county public schools two hours but did little to diminish travel on roadways.
The light snowfall covered the ground from Fremont to Mount Olive but posed few problems for motorists or people working outside.
Temperatures dipped into the teens overnight and were still in the 20s this morning, promising to keep the ground covered in snow at least through the day.
A winter weather advisory was in effect until late morning across most of the area.
There were no significant power outages reported by major utilities in the state.
Temperatures early today ranged from 8 degrees in Boone to 30 in Lumberton.
Officials warned wind chills could be as much as 20 below zero in higher elevations. Wind chills of 5 below zero were possible in the northeastern part of the state.
Skies were expected to clear later today but temperatures were still predicted to remain cold, with highs around 30.
Tonight is expected to be clear and cold, with lows around 17.
