A Wayne County man was killed in a one-vehicle accident on U.S. 13 South between Dobbersville and Bentonville roads before 7 p.m. Monday.
Deloit Cotton Best, 28, 1108 Grantham School Road, died after his vehicle, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, crossed the center line and went off the road to the right and struck a tree, according to a N.C. Highway Patrol report.
Best was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, according to the report.
The accident took place three-tenths of a mile miles east of Bentonville Road.
Highway Patrol officials say Best was not wearing his seat belt, and that at this time there is no determination whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
First responders arrived on scene and were forced to shut down traffic on U.S. 13 south of Bentonville Road until the accident was cleared.
No other injuries were reported.
