Former Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Randy Avon Thompson, 34, of 4709 Indian Springs Road, has been sentenced in Wayne County Superior Court for stealing from the office.

Thompson, charged by the State Bureau of Investigation with four counts each of obstruction of justice and stealing, altering or destroying evidence, pleaded guilty Dec. 9 to each of the latter charges.

He was sentenced to 6 to 8 months in prison and the sentence suspended. Thompson will serve 36 months probation.

The charges stemmed from a series of events beginning in November 2011 and running through 2012. Thompson stole money from the Sheriff's Office evidence locker in the amounts of $2,490, $436, $280 and $195.

The former K-9 officer became the subject of an internal investigation within the Sheriff's Office in June of 2012 and resigned in July of that year.

At that point he became subject to scrutiny from the S.B. I. and was subsequently charged Oct. 15, 2013 with the above listed crimes.

Thomspon will pay a $2,000 fine, $240 in attorney fees and serve 100 hours community service.
