PIKEVILLE -- The Pikeville Town Board annexed 30 acres of land on the southeast and southwest corners of the intersection of I-795 and Pikeville-Princeton Road at its meeting Monday night.

Following a short public hearing on a request by Billy Sutton to have his land annexed, the board voted unanimously to accept the tracts into the town limits.

Town Manager Blake Proctor said the land is currently zoned for agricultural use, but that the landowners intend to ask for it to be zoned for commercial use. The site would be ideal for a service station or fast-food restaurant, Proctor said.

The town already has annexed land on the northeast and northwest corners of the intersection.

In other business, the town received a positive audit report.

Accountant Phyllis Pearson told board members that the town is in good financial shape, but she noted that the town might have to consider increasing water and sewer rates to keep that fund in the black.

The board also agreed to accept a bid of $8,840 by Moye Fence Co. to erect a fence around the town cemetery, but tabled the submission of design bids for the site.

Proctor said that he wanted to go back and re-specify the work to be done to give the companies that were interested the same information.

Finally, three new members of the board were sworn in by Judge David Brantley. Glenn Hartman was sworn in as the new mayor, and Al Greene and Todd Smith were sworn in as board members.

Terms for those positions are four years.
