The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating the murder of a former Eastern Wayne High School student found shot to death in his car early Sunday morning.

A second person was injured in the incident but was not shot, police said.

The victim, identified as Gustin Garet Hinnant, 18, of 800 S. George St., was found by police responding to a service call in the 100 block of South Audubon Street at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a press release.

Hinnant was found in his vehicle with a gunshot wound. Wayne County EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

The patrol officers secured the vehicle, a green 1996 Cadillac DeVille, and called in the investigations unit, according to a police report.

The report, separate from the press release issued by police Sunday, said investigators located a second victim suffering from only minor injuries at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Versean Antonio Jenkins, 18, of Clayton, told investigators he only knew the victim as "Jersey."

Maj. Al King, head of investigations, said someone showed up injured at the hospital and that is how the police were informed of the shooting to begin with.

"Understand we are in the very early stages of this (investigation) and we are talking to several people at this time," King said.

Police Chief Jeff Stewart said a positive notification had been made and that he has spoken with the victim's family.

A Wayne County Public Schools official was able to confirm this morning that Hinnant was once a student at Eastern Wayne High School but said he withdrew earlier this month.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting death of Gustin Hinnant is asked to contact the Goldsboro Police Department at 919-580-4218 or call Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255
