A 12- or 13-year-old female student at Dillard Middle School, 1101 S. Devereaux St., was injured by glass from a falling light fixture inside the school's gym before 10 a.m. Friday, the Goldsboro Police Department said.
Due to her age, the student's identity was not released.
Wayne County Public Schools Communications Director Ken Derksen said the girl was injured during physical education class when a ball inadvertently struck a light fixture on the gym's ceiling causing it to break apart and fall.
Wayne County EMS and the Goldsboro Police Department responded.
EMS arrived at 9:58 a.m. and within 10 minutes was en route to the emergency room at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Officers with the Goldsboro Police Department were dispatched to notify the family.
"The extent of our involvement was just to locate a parent and escort them to the hospital to be with their child," Major Mike West said.
West said the fixture itself did not land on the victim, but she did receive lacerations to her face from the broken glass. He could not comment further on the extent of her injuries.
