RALEIGH -- Traffic is about to improve for motorists leaving Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Starting next week, the state Department of Transportation will begin construction of a second left-turn lane from northbound Oak Forest Road to U.S. 70, east of the U.S. Air Force base in Goldsboro.

The project, which is estimated to cost $350,000, is being done by SELCO Construction Co. of Smithfield and is scheduled to be completed by mid-December, weather permitting.

The additional left-turn lane was requested by Seymour Johnson Air Force Base to ease westbound traffic on Oak Forest Road that is currently backing up from the intersection as far back as Ash Street when shifts change at the base.

There will be minimal impact to traffic on U.S. 70 during construction. Occasional lane closures will be necessary on Oak Forest Road. Transportation officials will work with officials from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base to make sure that no lane closures are in place during times when shifts are changing and traffic is traditionally heavy.
