For the third time since its inception, the annual Alzheimer's Walk is undergoing a few changes.

Teams are being formed and walkers are invited to sign up to participate in the Alzheimer's N.C. Goldsboro Walk, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 26 in downtown Goldsboro, said Richard Hiatt, development director of the event.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. followed by opening ceremonies at 9. The walk will take place from 9:30 to 10:30. It will end before the 11 a.m. 2013 Really Chili Challenge benefiting the Community Soup Kitchen.

The event, designed to raise awareness for the disease, as well as funds for education and support for those living with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia and their caregivers and families, is sponsored by Alzheimer's N.C. Inc.

Over the years, the fundraiser has undergone several changes, most notably its name and location.

For the first eight years, the Alzheimer's Association sponsored the event, then called the Memory Walk and held at Herman Park.

In late 2009, local organizers disaffiliated from the national group and formed Alzheimer's N.C. Inc. in an effort to ensure that 100 percent of funds raised remain in eastern North Carolina.

The walk was renamed Neuse Region Alzheimer's Walk and for the past three years took place on the grounds of Wayne Community College.

This year's event will kick off at Cornerstone Commons, located at corner of Center and Chestnut streets.
