FREMONT -- The town of Fremont hired an interim town administrator at its Tuesday night meeting to fill in while they searches for a permanent replacement for Kerry McDuffie, who is leaving.

The town Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to hire Barbara Aycock, a former town administrator of Black Creek, after entering closed session to interview her for the position.

McDuffie will leave for Southport in the beginning of November to become the town manager there.

Mrs. Aycock has been working with the town in the finance department on a part-time basis to help close out with last year's budget and start preparation of the town's budget for 2013-14.

She spent eight years with the town of Black Creek in the administrator role as well as being the finance officer for the town.

Mrs. Aycock will work alongside McDuffie starting Oct. 28 until McDuffie's last day, Nov. 8.

The application period for the new town administrator will be open until Dec. 30 before the board begins to review applications to hire a replacement for McDuffie.

Mrs. Aycock said she will not seek the job as town administrator and that she is only helping out in the interim.

In other business, the board voted to enter into a contract to accept a Community Development Block Grant.
