PIKEVILLE -- A Pikeville man was discovered dead Saturday morning at approximately 4 a.m. after he had been struck by a train in between Fremont and Pikeville, Wayne County Sheriff's Office Detective Rick Farfour said.
James Smith, 43, was apparently lying down on the tracks near Governor Aycock Road when a supply train came down the tracks and struck him.
The investigation is being handled jointly by CSX Rail and the sheriff's office.
"We're still looking into it to see why he was on the tracks. He was in a very unpopulated area between the new police station and Governor Aycock Road," Farfour said.
