Keefe Decarlos McPhail, charged with first-degree murder in connection with the 2010 death of 21-month-old Kamari Bryant, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter Wednesday in Wayne County Superior Court.
Judge John E. Nobles sentenced McPhail, of 605 W. Queen St., LaGrange, to a maximum of 20 months in jail. McPhail, now 41, 37 when he committed the crime, received credit for time served.
Wayne County Sheriff's Office investigators charged McPhail with the baby's death Nov. 23, 2010, less than one month after the unresponsive infant was brought by his mother, Donnisha Bryant, to Wayne Memorial Hospital. Doctors pronounced the infant dead shortly thereafter.
McPhail, Ms. Bryant's then-boyfriend, has been incarcerated ever since.
The Greenville Medial Examiner's Office determined trauma to the body as the cause of death. Lenoir County Sheriff's Office deputies located and arrested McPhail and turned him over to Wayne authorities.
