During the 2012-13 school year, the Optimist Club of Goldsboro distributed 42 computers to low-income families with 105 children enrolled in the Wayne County Public Schools through its Optimist Computers4Kids program.

The computers were donated by county residents and the families were identified by the Wayne County Public Schools social workers.

For the 2013-14 school year, the Optimist Club of Goldsboro currently has 51 computers available for distribution to low-income families without a home computer and with at least one child enrolled in middle or high school in the Wayne County Public Schools.

The computers are pre-installed with the Microsoft Windows XP or 7 operating system and Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007. Desktop and tower computers also include a monitor, keyboard, mouse, mouse pad, speakers, USB Flash Drive, and all the necessary cables.

The price range for the computers is $40 to $60 and depends on the configuration that is purchased: desktop and tower computers with Window XP or 7 32-bit systems are $40 each; desktop or tower computers with Windows 7 64-bit systems are $50 each; and all laptops are $60 each regardless of which version of the operating system is pre-installed.

There is a limit of one computer per qualified family.

Low-income families that are interested in purchasing one of these computers for their child should contact the social worker at their child's school for an application.

Applications can also be obtained at the Optimist Club's website at goldsborooptimist.org or by calling 919-288-2567.

The Optimist Club of Goldsboro will review all submitted applications and schedule approved families for a distribution and training day to pick up their computers.

Normally, the Optimist Club of Goldsboro will have a distribution and training day for the Optimist Computers4Kids program on the first Saturday of each month during the 2013-2014 school year. The first distribution and training day for this school year has been scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7.
