PDGA to hold disc golf tourney at real golf course

This Saturday, the Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course will be host to a whole new type of golf tournament as members of the Professional Disc Golf Association will take over after the amateur duffers are done.
The PDGA tournament, which will be played partly at Stoney Creek Park and partly at the golf course will begin after the amateur tournament ends.
The hybrid disc golf tournament is part of a string of tournaments hosted by Spike Hyzer, which lets PDGA disc golfers accumulate points throughout the year for prizes at the end of the season.
It will be the first tournament in Goldsboro not managed by the Goldsboro Disc Golf Club, though the group are participating in getting the temporary course set up at the front nine holes of the golf course, said Ben Farlow.
"For a lot of our members it will be their first time playing on a ball golf course," Farlow said. "We've all played Stoney Creek a bunch and it's just awesome to have greens and bunkers."
Entrance fees to the tournament start at $35 for amateurs and go to $65 for professionals, based on skill level, said tournament director Chuck Connelly, who runs Spike Hyzer tournaments.
Any non-PDGA players must pay an additional $10.
It costs $50 to join the PDGA and get a PDGA number to track your finishes.
The top players in the professional and amateur divisions will win a cash purse and disc golf equipment or attire, respectively, said Connelly.
An additional $1,000 is being added to the purse by the PDGA.
PDGA Masters Champion Brian Schweberger is expected participate in the tournament along with other professionals from North Carolina and neighboring states.
The tournament will begin with a test run of the golf course portion Friday afternoon, starting at 4 p.m., said Goldsboro Parks and Recreation Director Scott Barnard.
The cost to play the golf course Friday, an opportunity open to anyone, will be $20.
Saturday morning, the tournament will begin at Stoney Creek Park at 8:30 a.m. with registration. Play will continue at the Goldsboro golf course at 2 p.m., and then again at Stoney Creek at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
