A Goldsboro man has been charged in the June 30 stabbing of a Dudley man at a stoplight.

Kelton Reid Sutton Jr., 43, was arrested by the Goldsboro Police Department at 608 Simmons St. Tuesday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and carrying a concealed weapon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail under a $40,000 secured bond.

Charles L. Smith, 36, of 201 Genoa Lane, was seated in the passenger seat of a truck stopped at the intersection of Oak Street and North George Street at 10:45 p.m. when Sutton allegedly stabbed him four times in the lower right leg after Smith refused to give him a cigarette.

The victim was immediately driven to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment. It was there that he met with investigators from the Police Department.

Investigator L.D. Bethea was assigned to the case July 1, and an arrest warrant was obtained Tuesday.

Sutton was taken into custody without incident and will make his next appearance in Wayne County District Court July 24.
