Thanks to numerous tips called in to Crime Stoppers, a joint law enforcement operation brought down a suspected bank robber in Pikeville Wednesday.
It was more than two weeks ago that the Heritage Bank at 100 W. Main St. in Pikeville was robbed at gunpoint by an person who seemed to be acting alone.
Jeffrey Edwards, 36, of 272 Ivey Lane in Pikeville, was taken into custody without incident at an address on Booker Street. He was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and held under a $500,000 secured bond.
Police believe Edwards is the man seen on security camera footage taken from the bank wearing a blue rain suit, blue surgical gloves, a wig and glasses. He left on foot, but may have had a car waiting nearby.
Pikeville Police Chief Pascal Tucker said that Edwards was arrested at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, and that the Wayne County Sheriff's Office was instrumental in the operation.
"I want to make sure and thank and give credit to the ACE Team and SWAT Team (of the Sheriff's Office,) and to the FBI," he said.
The amount of money taken from the bank was never made public, and no mention was made of any currency being recovered.
