Southeastern Cancer Care's "Cures for the Colors" marathon event raised more than $62,000 in donations to help people suffering from cancer.

All the funds raised at the event, which was held in April, will remain in eastern North Carolina to help those currently battling cancer or who are with-in one year of completing treatment by providing them with gas, food, utilities, prescription drugs, etc.

More than 770 people took part in the marathon, with eight completing the certified marathon course and five which completed the individual 100-mile course. The top competitors were: Brandy Gamboa in the marathon (26.2 miles) in 3:35.30 and Scott Venuti in the ultra-marathon (100 miles) in 20:53.45.

Organizers said they wanted to express their gratitude to the volunteers who worked before, during and after the event.
