PIKEVILLE -- The town of Pikeville has hired a new town administrator.

Blake Proctor, 65, was announced at Monday night's meeting of the Pikeville Town Board.

Proctor most recently served as town manager of Fairmont, near the South Carolina border, but he has extensive experience in various capacities in small town government across the South.

"He comes well qualified," said Mayor Johnny Weaver. "I feel we're very fortunate to have someone of his caliber in the job."

Proctor will officially take over as town administrator on May 20. But he said he plans to use the time beforehand to get to know the town better, driving the streets until he memorizes them and learning all the business owners in town.

"I am a small town specialist," Proctor said. "I like the ambiance of a small town, I like the people."

Proctor said he would maintain an open door policy to all residents.

"Anyone can come in and talk to me anytime," he said.

Proctor had retired from Fairmont in 2011 and worked as a consultant since then.

"It's good to be back," he said.

In other business, the town adopted a resolution in support of the Charles B. Aycock birthplace, which has been threatened with closure by the state.
