Four in competition for title of Miss Mardi Gras

Four women are competing for the Miss Mardi Gras 2013 crown that will be presented Friday, April 19 as part of the annual fundraiser sponsored by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. for its scholarship program.

Fraternity members have been divided into four groups to represent the four cardinal principles of the fraternity -- manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift -- upon which it was founded in 1911, members said.

Each contestant will represent one of those areas. They are:

* Tamiko Loftin, manhood. Ms. Loftin is a graduate of North Lenoir High School and East Carolina University. She is employed at Eastpointe.

* Cynthia H. Summerville, scholarship. Ms. Summerville is a graduate of Barton College and Central Michigan University. She is self-employed as the owner and operator of Aaron's Playground, Inc. in Snow Hill.

* Chanella Monroe, perseverance. Ms. Monroe is a graduate of Greene Central High School. She is employed at Realo Drugs in Snow Hill.

* Jean Barnes, uplift. Ms. Barnes is a graduate of Johnston Community College and Fayetteville State University/Strayer University. She is employed as an administrator for Grifois Therapeutics Inc. in Clayton.

The winner, who will represent the fraternity over the next year and will be crowned at the Mardi Gras Gala on April 19 at 8 p.m. at the Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni Center on Poplar Street.

Admission is $25 in advance and $25 at the door. All proceeds will go to the fraternity' scholarship program for Wayne County students and for supporting other community activities.

The theme is "A Worldwide Celebration-Spring Fling." Colorful outfits are encouraged and monetary prizes will be awarded to the persons wearing the best costumes.
